Fruit labels often display a PLU number. This number identifies product variety and normally size, enabling differential pricing across products and varieties at the retail check-out.
• PLU numbers also can denote organic or genetically modified products.
• Most PLU numbers are based on an international numbering system through the International Federation of Produce Standards. The IFPS is a coalition of global produce associations whose objective is to harmonise international standards (see www.plucodes.com).
• Within the IFPS system there is scope for "Retailer Assigned" numbers to be used for smaller, lower volume, varieties.
• Certain retailers have their own series of PLU numbers, independent of IFPS systems. |
