Adapting & Leading the Way: Sustainable Fruit Labels
By Duncan Jones, Senior Marketing Manager
At Sinclair we have a proven track record of sustainable label solutions for use with Sinclair high-speed fruit labeling systems. In 2014 we launched our first compostable face stock label Sinclair EcoLabel®. In 2019 the label was relaunched with the entire construction - Face stock, Adhesive, Eco Inks - certified 'OK compost - INDUSTRIAL' (OKI-S0728). In 2021 we launched Sinclair EcoLabel HOME™ T50, a paper fruit label which has its complete construction certified 'OK compost - HOME' (OKH – S0728).
Underpinned by this successful record of accomplishment we are soon to launch another sustainable label innovation. This new addition, T52, to our sustainable label range is compliant with French law no. 2020-105 Article 80 and has a home compostable film face stock, Eco Inks and a food-grade adhesive.
The label provides different performance attributes compared to our certified home compostable paper label and is suitable for harder to label fruit such as green kiwi or avocado. A film-based label can, in some applications, provide superior conformity and adhesion compared to a paper label. There are however, many factors that can impact fruit labeling performance. The fruit skin, the labeling system, the packinghouse configuration and the supply chain conditions can all influence label performance all the way to the point of sale.
With 40 years’ experience of continuous improvement in fruit labeling systems and fruit labeling performance, Sinclair uniquely understands the myriad of influences and challenges of developing sustainable fruit labels and labeling different fruit types.
Wil Murray, Senior Operations Director, commented, "Development of a new film based compostable face stock is an example of how we have again adapted to rapidly changing customer and market requirements. Continuous performance improvement is core to our business ethos and with continued investment in new sustainable label solutions we continue to offer the highest quality products, customized automated labeling systems with unmatched customer service and support. The fruit label is already a minimal packaging solution but we recognize it is essential to continue to explore alternative home compostable label solutions to ensure fruit labeling is sustainable as well as functional.”
Fruit labeling is a key tool for our customers to be able to provide product information to consumers, allow product traceability, create supply chain efficiency and reduce waste. Continuing to provide and develop compostable fruit labeling solutions allows our business to achieve these goals as well as to serve our customer needs today without adversely impacting the environment in the future.
