Procesadora Baika S. A. de C. V becomes first in Mexico to adopt compostable PLU labels on avocados

In a groundbreaking move, Procesadora Baika S.A. de C.V. has become the first packaging company in Mexico to implement certified compostable PLU labels on avocados. This milestone marks a significant advancement in sustainable packaging practices across Latin America.

The initiative is the result of a strategic partnership with Sinclair, a global leader in fresh produce labeling solutions. Baika has adopted Sinclair – T55 compostable label, a high-performance, environmentally conscious solution that meets international composting standards for both industrial and home composting.

“We wanted to go beyond efficient operations; we set out to innovate with impact, and this led us to seek a truly compostable label,” said Omar Cervantes Avilés, Packaging Manager at Baika Mexico.

To be a viable alternative to conventional labels, the T55 had to match Baika’ performance expectations in real-world packing conditions—specifically, high-speed application rates of up to 720 fruits per minute per lane. The label passed with flying colors.

Meeting composting standards EN 13432, NFT 51-800, and AS 5810, T55 is independently certified by TÜV AUSTRIA, DIN CERTCO, and the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) as well as meeting global food safety compliance.

“With the T55 label, we’re taking another step toward a responsible and replicable packaging model,” Cervantes added.

The collaboration with Baika and Sinclair reflects a shared vision: that the future of fruit labeling must be sustainable.

“Partnerships like this sets new benchmarks for innovation and environmental responsibility in more and more markets in our industry. “This again demonstrates the appetite of our customers to move to sustainable packaging sooner rather than later—and before any regulatory mandate.” commented Duncan Jones, Senior Marketing Manager at Sinclair
